FAQs

FAQs About Dental Abscess

Here are some signs that you may have a tooth abscess:

  • A pimple-like bump on your gums
  • Long-lasting throbbing pain
  • Pain when biting or chewing
  • Sensitive teeth
  • Loose tooth
  • Foul taste in your mouth
  • Bad breath
  • Toothache that spreads to your jaw, neck, or ear
  • Fever

Leaving an abscess untreated can lead to the spreading of the infection to other parts of your body, such as the jaw, head, or neck. This infection can cause tooth loss and even life-threatening complications like bone infections, sinus infections, brain abscesses, and sepsis.

Your dentist will determine which treatment is right for you based on the type and severity of your abscess:

  1. Antibiotic Therapy:
Your dentist may prescribe oral antibiotics if the infection has spread or your immune system is weak.
  2. Draining the Abscess:
This is the most effective treatment. Your dentist may apply gentle pressure to the affected area to release pus. After the fluid is drained, your dentist will use a tiny probe to remove any debris left in the abscess. The dentist can also drain the pus through an abscess incision.
  3. Root Canal Therapy:
The treatment involves draining an abscess and removing the infected inner soft tissue called pulp from a tooth. The inner part of the tooth is cleaned and later on, filled and sealed for protection.
  4. Tooth Extraction:
In some cases, it may be necessary to extract an abscessed tooth. An artificial tooth replacement can then be placed after the extraction site has healed.

Depending on the size of the abscess, the wound will take 10 to 14 days to heal after your dentist drains it. However, keep in mind that draining of the abscess is not sufficient. It is important to determine the source of the abscess, then remove or clean the source.  Proper treatment will allow complete healing.
