FAQs About Dentures
Who is a good candidate for dentures?
Dentures are an excellent prosthetic tooth option for those who have lost some or all of their teeth. A denture is an effective dental treatment to replace missing teeth for men and women who have significant tooth loss. Whether you can have false teeth depends not on your age but rather on the condition of your natural teeth and your aesthetic and functional needs. Ideal candidates are those that have healthy gums and enough jawbone structure. In order to stay in place for long periods of time, dentures require sufficient support from natural tissue.
To determine your suitability for dentures, please book an appointment with us. Our team of dentists can then perform a thorough examination of your mouth and recommend a tailored treatment plan for your teeth.
How long do dentures usually last?
What is the process of getting dentures?
An examination of your teeth is the first step in the denture process. Your dentist will conduct a thorough examination to determine your suitability for dentures and if additional dental treatments, like tooth extraction, may be needed. Your dentist will then take an impression of your mouth and take measurements in order to ensure that the dentures will fit correctly. Your dentures will be made in a dental lab using the impressions sent by your dentist. Your dentist may recommend temporary dentures in the meantime.
You will need to come back for a second appointment for a denture fitting once the dentures have been completed. A proper denture fit is critical for your daily comfort and confidence. You may have trouble keeping your denture in place if it is not fitted carefully. We make sure you get comfortable dentures so that you can wear them with confidence. If necessary, we can make adjustments to the dentures at this appointment.
Can I wear my dentures overnight?
How should I clean my dentures?
Joondanna Family Dental recommends cleaning your dentures regularly so that they last as long as possible.
Follow our three-step checklist for your denture cleaning routine:
- If your denture is removable, you need to remove them at night – Do NOT wear them to sleep! The tissues and gums that are covered all day need to breathe! This also reduces the likelihood of fungal and bacterial infections over time. Gently brush the dentures with a soft toothbrush to remove plaque and food residue and leave them in their container overnight.
- In the morning, brush them again and wear them throughout the day.
- Use the cleaning agent or denture cleaner recommended by your dentist for your set of dentures.
DO NOT use:
- Hot or boiling water, as it can deform the material
- Abrasives or bleach
- Methylated spirits
What should I do if my dentures are loose or broken?
What are the alternatives to dentures?
Here are some alternatives to dentures:
- Dental Implants:
Implants are artificial tooth replacements that anchor into the jawbone to replace the roots of missing teeth. Their resemblance to natural teeth makes them a popular alternative to dentures. Dental implants are, however, more expensive than dentures. - Dental Bridges:
A bridge fills the gap left in your mouth by a missing tooth by utilising the adjacent teeth as support and retention. Unlike traditional removable dentures, dental bridges are permanently affixed to healthy teeth on either side of the missing tooth or space.
